Joyce Kent

I grew up in Homewood and the south side of Birmingham, Alabama. I attended Jacksonville State and University of Alabama Birmingham. I am currently retired from the Commercial Insurance Industry as a Commercial Lines Underwriter and live in Warrior, Alabama. My volunteer work is faith based through the United Methodist Church. It has been a springboard to meeting people from different denominations and different faiths. I have worked with Kairos Outside, a ministry for the families of those in prison, having served on the Board and as a volunteer on retreat weekends. I am active in Family Promise Ministries, an interfaith ministry in Birmingham that houses homeless families. I have served on the Board and volunteer as a host when families are guests at my church. I have two grown children, a granddaughter soon to be age three, and my mother.

Maturing

I was 13 years old in 1963, and a student at Homewood Junior High. I do remember the Sunday the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was bombed. Innocent children were killed in God’s house, in a terrorist act.

Before this, I was going along with the crowd. My father told my mother, my sister and me not to go downtown that summer. Every nut in the United States was congregating down there.
