NBC Nightly News brings story of reconciliation, reporting on Kids in Birmingham 1963 retreat

“Coming Together.” What better day than Thanksgiving for a national news story on the Kids in Birmingham 1963 event.

 

In September, 25 of us “Kids,” the children of segregated Birmingham, came together to connect with each other and to welcome the city’s rising generations to join us. NBC national correspondent Rehema Ellis interviewed Kids for this NBC Nightly News story, broadcast on Thanksgiving Day.

kids in birmingham dance the night awayWe brought together the broader Birmingham community for “Twistin’ the Night Away,”dancing together, black and white, as we could never have done in the ’60s. CBS42 News carried the story.

jackie robinson daughterKids in Birmingham 1963 partnered with the Negro Southern League Museum to feature Sharon Robinson, author and daughter of baseball great Jackie Robinson at a book event featuring six writers and their Birmingham civil rights books. The Birmingham Times interviewed Ms. Robinson, publishing this report in conjunction with our well-attended event.
