One day in 1963 that stands out for me is when Dr. Martin Luther King, Dr. Ralph Abernathy, James Farmer, and Rev. Abraham Woods came through our home so that they could get back down to St. Joseph Baptist Church without being seen in the area. This was one of the nights that Attorney Arthur Shores’ home was bombed. They were in the neighborhood trying to make sure that Attorney Shores and his family were okay. The police also heard that Dr. King was in the area, and if they had caught him that night, they would have put him in jail.

Deborah Davis Dent
We were saddened to learn that Deborah Davis Dent passed away in September 2022. The last we’d heard from her, in 2019, she was preparing to speak with her granddaughter’s 3rd-grade class for Black History Month. We miss having her in our Kids community. What follows is the bio that Ms. Dent shared in 2013, when she published her story with us:
Born July 29, 1954. I have one sibling, Dottie, who is 7 years older than I am. I attended Tuggle, Wilkerson and Graymont elementary schools. I went to Ramsay High School for 2 years, 1968-1970. Then I attended Parker High School in which I graduated in 1972. I went on to get my Bachelors degree from Alabama A&M University in Normal, Alabama. I have 3 wonderful children and 2 grandchildren. I retired from BellSouth in 2004, and live in Birmingham, Alabama.
